Tomorrow, Saturday 18 July, the 29th edition of the Gallio Film Festival opens.
Born to give space and visibility to directors making their first feature film, over the years the Festival has become an important meeting point between cinema, culture and territory: not merely a showcase, but a space where new authors can present their work, meet audiences and engage with professionals of the field.
The Festival's history tells the value of this intuition well. Its stage has welcomed masters and protagonists of Italian cinema such as Ermanno Olmi, Daniele Luchetti, Mario Martone, Carlo Mazzacurati and Bruno Bozzetto.
Some directors presented their first films here before becoming names known around the world: Paolo Sorrentino with L'uomo in più, Emanuele Crialese with Respiro, and in later years Luca Guadagnino and Alice Rohrwacher.
From 18 to 25 July, the first week of the event is dedicated to the Italian debut films in competition, and closes with the announcement of the winning film.
From 26 July to 2 August, Storie dell'altro cinema (Stories of Other Cinema) widens the view to international first and second works, crossing different cultures, languages and sensibilities.
This year, at the start of every evening, Alma Hale welcomes the audience with Whispered Green: a short two-minute poetic film, born from the light, the landscapes and the breath of the Plateau of the Seven Communities, accompanied by Alma's music of the same name.
Before the room goes dark,
the green will begin to whisper.
